Filipino athletes made a buzz and stole the international sports scene as they competed in their respective specialties in different international competitions. In gymnastics, Carlos Yulo impressed the world with his stint in the 51st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool, England where he clinched silver in vault, bronze in parallel bars, seventh in floor exercise, and eighth in the all-around.
Aside from Caloy in gymnastics, Ernest John ‘EJ’ Obiena conquered the pole vault scene claiming several medals in various events in three months and defeating several vaulters like world record holder Armand Duplantis.
Obiena’s gold haul includes the 2022 True Athletes Classics, Internationales Stabhochsprung-Meeting and St. Wendel City Jump in Germany, Wanda Diamond League’s Memorial van Damme leg in Belgium, Golden Fly Series in Liechtenstein, and Gala dei Castelli in Switzerland.
Tennis player Alex Eala also bannered the sports scene being the first Filipino to win a junior Grand Slam singles title in the 2022 US Open in New York City. Eala smashed her way through the title after defeating Czech player Lucie Havlíčková placing her at rank 252 on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings.
In team sports, the Creamline-powered Philippine National Women’s Volleyball Team records it best finish at the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Women placing sixth place after being defeated by the Chinese Taipei Squad.
The Philippine team placed ninth during the competition’s 2018 edition in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
Moreover, Rubilen Amit, Carlo Biado, and Johann Chua of the Philippines claimed thrones in the singles and mixed doubles categories of the 2022 Predator World 10-ball Team Championship in Klagenfurt, Austria, defeating Great Britain’s Darren Appleton, Kelly Fisher, and Jayson Shaw.
