Noting that scholarships are not only an opportunity but also a responsibility, BS in Accountancy Batch 2001 alumnus Edward R. Mansion encouraged students to give back and invest in the next generation, as encapsulated in his speech at the Scholars’ Assembly and Recognition of Academic Scholars, AEC Little Theater, Sept. 17.
“ [A scholarship] is also a responsibility. The sponsors who believe in you, the professors who teach you, the mentors who guide you—they are all investing in your future. Make the most of this investment […] And when the time comes, remember to give back, to become an investor in the next generation of scholars, and to keep the cycle of growth and success alive,” Mansion said.
As a professional in banking and development financing for over 20 years, Mansion linked scholarships with investments, stating that sponsors who fund scholarships are investors who put their trust in scholars.
“Scholarships are […] a form of investment. The sponsors who fund these scholarships […] are investors. They are making a choice to place their trust, their resources, and their hopes in all of you, our scholars. They see potential in you, and they believe that with the right support, you will grow, succeed, and, in time, give back,” Mansion said.
Mansion also elaborated on the University’s core values in his speech, which he said would be beneficial for the scholars as these are the same values that became his key to success and are what guided him throughout his personal and professional life.
“Let me take this opportunity to reflect on the core values of MSEUF, which I believe are key to this journey of investment and return. These values—mindfulness, service, excellence, unity, and fortitude—have guided me throughout my personal and professional life, and I am certain they will serve you just as well,” Mansion said.
Meanwhile, the Vice President for External Relations, Mr. Celso D. Jaballa, congratulated the scholars, asserting that the ceremony is a testament to the scholars’ dedication, resilience, and determination to succeed.
“This assembly is not merely a recognition of your achievements, […] it is more importantly a celebration of your dedication, resilience, and determination to excel […] To be a scholar at MSEUF is no small feat. It is a badge of honor that reflects your intellectual prowess and character. It is through your hard work and determination towards your goals that you are able to earn this recognition,” Jaballa said.
Jaballa also appealed to the scholars to strive for greater heights, look beyond their current situations, and recognize that the efforts they make today will shape the future ahead.
Furthermore, MSEUF Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academics and Research, Dr. Benilda N. Villenas, who also serves as the Officer in Charge of the Office of the President, reminded scholars that the recognition is a milestone, encouraging them to use their education to inspire others and create positive change in the world.
Three hundred sixty scholars, including the 120 newly recognized institutional and externally funded grantees, attended the event.
