Alexandra Eala made history as she became the first Filipino to win the Grand Slam singles title at the US Open on September 11 in Flushing Meadows, New York, after winning against Czech Lucie Havlickova, scoring 6-2, 6-4.

The 17-year-old displayed her prowess as she trailed the first set with 1-2 and gained the upper hand in successive sets.

But, Havlickova equalized after breaking the No. 10 seed’s serve. She made her flawless run in Game 9 where she regained momentum after breaking the second seed’s serve, capping as the champion.

Eala won against Canadian Victoria Mboko in the semis and Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals before her historic win.
