For S.Y. 2022-2023, incoming or new students might experience a 5% increase in tuition fees, as proposed by the MSEUF executive officer and board of trustees in the recently concluded Tuition Consultation via Zoom, yesterday – May 24.

On the other hand, tuition fees for old students from upcoming 2nd-year students to those who registered in S.Y. 2021 – 2022, as well as the miscellaneous fees, will not be subject to increase.

To illustrate for the tertiary level, the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) and College of Maritime Education (CME), from the current P847.00 per unit, will now become P889.00. While the rest of the departments which have 807.00-peso price per unit, will now be P847.00.

Also, new students for the Masteral program will experience a five percent hike – from P1,415.00 per unit, the new price will be P1,486.00. The reason for the proposed increase is due to the university still following the 2019-2020 tuition fee guidelines, crafted because of the pandemic which withheld rate increase for 3 years already.

This has taken a toll on the private institution because MSEUF sources its funds from the tuition fees of students, in addition to refunds given when face-to-face classes are cut off. Going further, the would-be allocation for the additional funds that will be obtained in the hike was also provided: 70% will go “directly to adjusting the salary scale of employees (faculty and staff),” while the remaining 30% will go to “the executive officer for the development of the school.”

To add, the board reasoned that the 5% increase is based on the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) inflation rate and emphasized that it is just the bare minimum because the university is tax-exempted due to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR)-set guidelines. The hike will take effect on the next school year. However, it should be noted that it is still subject to the approval of CHED.
