Cheetahs, pinaamo ang Pumas sa Men’s Basketball, 72-62

Ipinaramdam ng College of Criminal Justice and Criminology (CCJC) Cheetahs ang kanilang liksi at bangis sa College of Maritime Education (CME) Pumas para tangayin ang ginto sa Men’s Basketball Tournament sa University Gymnasium bilang parte ng Intramural Games 2023, Oktubre 29.

Umarangkada ang CCJC Cheetahs, dating Raptors, papuntang finals bilang undefeated team upang makuha ang twice-to-beat advantage sa 18-match na torneyo.

“Pagpasok namin sa unang game, feeling namin na kami ‘yung underdog … ngayong intrams, ‘yung pressure nasa amin kasi kami ‘yung overall champion nang ilang taon,” ani CCJC coach Ullyses Ranas.

Bagama’t nilunod ng mga Marino ang CCJC sa unang quarter, 21-14, umabante naman ang Cheetahs sa ikalawang quarter matapos magpaulan ng tres si Lester Alcantara para ikadena ang Pumas, 40-29.

Patuloy na inungusan ng CCJC ang CME sa ikatlong quarter, 58-41, hanggang umabot sa final quarter kung saan nanaig ang Cheetahs.

“Ang talagang pinagpokusan namin ay ‘yung depensa—kahit makawala ‘yung opensa [namin], at least bumabawi [kami] sa depensa … doon talaga kami nag standout, kaya nakuha namin ang kampeonato,” dagdag ni coach Ranas.

Tinanghal naman na most valuable player (MVP) si Alcantara na umambag ng 20 puntos para sa Cheetahs.

“Maraming salamat po sa panginoon natin dahil hindi po tayo pinabayaan sa intramurals na ito. Nagpapasalamat po ako sa mga taga-suporta namin at saka sa mga coaches at sa suporta ng [teammates] ko,” ani Alcantara.

Tila full circle ang labanan para sa Pumas dahil matatandaang ikalawang puwesto rin ang kanilang inupuan noong nakaraang Intramural Games matapos dominahin ng College of Engineering (CEng) Tigers.

Sinubukan namang depensahan ng CEng Tigers ang kanilang kampeonato ngunit nabigong makapasok sa finals matapos pabagsakin ng Pumas sa semi-finals, 70-52.
