In a society where gender stereotypes still prevail, women continue to break barriers and prove that they are capable of excelling in any field they set their minds to. I am currently a 3rd year Bachelor of Science in Criminology student, and I am associated with a male-dominated program, BS Criminology. A program where struggles and stereotypes are faced by women like me.
From the moment I stepped foot into the criminology program, people with skeptical arched eyebrows kept asking why I even chose criminology as a program. Through the years society’s preconceived notions cast doubt on women’s ability to thrive in a male-dominated world. However, it is precise that these stereotypes fuel my determination to be an aspirational woman and prove that gender does not define my capabilities.
A significant challenge I’ve faced in the criminology field is striking a balance between embracing femininity and asserting professionalism. The pressure to conform to masculine ideals and assimilate within a predominantly male environment can create an internal struggle. Ultimately, I navigate to shatter the myth that being feminine hinders one’s ability to lead with authority and conviction.
Despite the challenges, I try to emerge as one of the most promising and determined individuals within our program. Gradually, I am leading the way and inspiring change by breaking down gender barriers. I have been continuously joining competitions, organizations, and publications– making a name for our program. I bring a unique perspective to my program, incorporating empathy, communication, collaboration, and participation. I also strive to serve as a role model for aspiring female criminology students, showing them that gender is not a deterrent to success or leadership.
By standing tall and proving my worth, I can still contribute to creating a more inclusive and diverse law enforcement community. My achievements challenge societal norms and encourage a shift in perception. My journey serves as a reminder that the pursuit of justice knows no gender and that a harmonious coexistence of men and women in our field is not only achievable but also necessary. Through women’s relentless dedication, mental fortitude, and determination to succeed, we demonstrate that a strong mind and heart triumph over gender stereotypes.
