Queries and opinions are now increasing regarding the importance of face shields; it is proper to discuss this. Do face shields reduce COVID transmission? Will face shields benefit in preventing COVID-19?

From this standpoint, it is visible that the time has come for people to dispose of face shields, as we are the only country left using face shields. Additionally, this practice is expensive for those less privileged individuals, uncomfortable, and has less efficiency in preventing the virus. For months now, people have been hoping to discard face shields.

Last June, President Duterte said that wearing face shields is inconvenient and would only be required in hospitals. Hours later, he reversed himself, and Malacañang announced that face shields were mandatory outside and inside public places.

Face shields secure the entire face, including the nose, mouth, and eyes, which could be an entry point for the virus. The plastic panel prevents respiratory droplets. However, it is proven by the WHO that face shields have less efficiency than face masks. Unlike face masks, which protect a person from others, face shields protect the wearer. Nevertheless, the CDC states that face shields cannot be a substitute for face masks.

Moreover, face shields can be uncomfortable to wear, especially for those who wear glasses. As the day progresses, the plastic panel can become steamy and foggy, creating hindrances. Furthermore, individuals using face shields need to remove them to communicate with others loudly and clearly.

Thus, for less privileged individuals, face shields are expensive, making it challenging for them to comply.

Hence, both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not recommend wearing face shields as a policy.
